My uncle use to call me “fingers”. I’d take apart anything and everything. Then it was on to building EICO tuners and Amps. Remember those? They were solid state radios that required soldering all the provided components together. My father was instrumental in getting me involved with electronics. Additionally, he got my brother and I involved with sailing! By the age of 13, I was actually skippering our beloved wooden Lightning in local regattas. I had a discussion with a local sailor, Frank Gentile, and we talked about how we’d like to create a new Lighting from a bare hull. I ended creating 3 of these Buchanan Lightning before I figured out it wasn’t very lucrative crawling around in glass fibers. Meanwhile I worked for a printing company, accounting of all things. It was a smallish company that went through growing pains. I ended up installing a token-ring network and developing a quoting system in an effort to get a large group of sales people effectively selling print product. Back when faxes weren’t so popular, I managed to get these guys to estimate much quicker than other printers and send a quote to a fax machine quickly! I guess I was the electronics guy there as well. We had German-based machines for the printing press, and it became a self taught environment on dealing with three-phase motors and electronics. My fathers commitment to my like Tronics beginnings and the ability to read schematics came in incredibly handy.
